World Of Tanks

Roles

Players have the choice of taking up different roles on the battlefield and while all tanks can perform a similar role certain classes of tank excel at particular roles. Whatever the style of play you perform whether hiding behind dense bushes and sniping or leading the assault to the front lines knowing your class of tank and the roles it best performs at will increase your chances of success on the battlefield. A player can also be more versatile by knowing when to switch roles as the game plays out. However it is important to note that World Of Tanks is a team game and communication amongst players, even just using the in-game commands let alone a microphone, will not only boost your chances of success but will also increase your game enjoyment.

Recommendations for each role listed below are simply that, recommendations! Players need to determine for themselves the best choice of equipment, skills, perks, and consumables to use based on their preferred roles, class of tank, and styles of play. The Brothers In Arms perk is recommended for all roles and tank classes to boost crew skills. Players who plan on keeping a particular tank and crew should also consider the Mentor skill to boost crew experience.

Scout

The Scout's main role is to be the "eyes and ears" for the team venturing up to or near the front line areas or using the terrain to their advantage to hide and spot enemy tanks. Unfortunately many players who take up a scouting role in particular those in light tanks usually end up the first casualty of their team due to them often being the first to be spotted and hence targeted by the enemy. A Scout that can stay alive for most or all of the game can really frustrate and disrupt the enemies capability to remain hidden, and is an excellent forward spotter and communicator with allied artillery. Scouts also make great artillery hunters if they can break through or find a way past enemy lines using their speed. Scout's can also switch roles and take up an Assault Support role flanking the enemy from behind and damaging critical components. Whether an aggressive scout always on the move or a passive scout taking up hiding positions behind bushes it is important for Scouts to use terrain effectively. Popular Scouts include the:
  • USA Tier V - M24 Chaffee
  • UK Tier V - Crusader
  • French Tier VII - AMX 13 75
  • USSR Tier VI - MT-25
  • German Tier VI - VK 28.01

Sniper Role

The role of the Sniper is to find a good place to hide i.e. behind bushes or terrain (or both) and unleash hell on any enemy player who happens to wander into your line of sight. Snipers can play either a defensive role whereby they defend their base, or an aggressive role whereby they take up assault positions and provide support for the front line tanks. A Sniper that can take up a good shooting position on a key corridor on a map can really hold up the enemy advance. The key to playing the Sniper role is of course to remain hidden and the best form of cover are large dense bushes. Once spotted a Sniper needs to consider relocating or switching roles as remaining in the same place makes the player a nice target for enemy artillery. Players should consider using tanks with a low profile and good camouflage rating if playing the role of Sniper. Popular Snipers include the:

  • USA Tier IX - T95
  • UK Tier VII - AT 7
  • French Tier X - AMX 50 Foch (155)
  • USSR Tier VIII - ISU-152
  • German Tier VIII - Rhm.-Borsig Waffenträger

Main Assault

As per the title, the role of Main Assault is to get into the thick of the action on the front lines. Players who take up a Main Assault role should do so if driving a top tier tank in the game in order to be most effective and have the greatest chance of survival. Simply rushing to the front line in a tier 7 heavy tank like a T29 and trying to take on a tier 9 heavy tank like an E-75 is rather fruitless due to the imbalance of armor protection and firepower. Combat can often get very close and at times even point blank where players are trading paint let alone rounds. It is important to use armor angling to increase the chance of enemy shell deflection, and players should also use the terrain and surroundings to their advantage especially when reloading to provide extra protection from artillery. Main Assault is most effective when working as a team whereby players can focus their firepower on particular enemies based on the level of threat. Popular Main Assault tanks include the:

  • USA Tier VII - T29
  • UK Tier VIII - Caernarvon
  • French Tier IX - AMX 50 120
  • USSR Tier X - IS-7
  • German Tier VIII - Tiger II

Assault Support

The role of Assault Support is to roll behind the Main Assault tanks and provide additional firepower or alternatively take up firing positions on enemies engaged on the front lines. It is best reserved for players using heavy tanks that are a lower tier in the game, or players using medium tanks or tank destroyers with rotating turrets. Assault Support are excellent flankers especially if using a tank with a decent top speed i.e. medium tank where the player can get into a position to engage the sides or rear of enemy tanks. This can really distract an enemy player into turning their tank to face the player exposing them further to the Main Assault tanks. If rolling behind the Main Assault tanks players should try and minimise the amount of exposure to enemy tanks especially if assaulting heavy tanks and tank destroyers of higher tiers as they can severely cripple a player using a lower tier tank. Players struggling to penetrate higher tiers should consider targeting critical spots such as tank tracks. Popular Assault Support tanks include the:

  • USA Tier VIII - T26E4 Super Pershing
  • UK Tier IX - Centurion Mk. 7/1
  • French Tier X - Bat.-Châtillon 25 t
  • USSR Tier X - T-62A
  • German Tier VII - Panther

Artillery Fire

Boasting some of the biggest guns in the game, players that take up the role of Artillery Fire can cause devastating amounts of damage on the battlefield and change the tide of the battle. This role is exclusively reserved for Artillery only as no other tank can provide long range firepower. Artillery Fire can be used both in an offensive or defensive role. Most players play offensively targeting enemy tanks spotted by team mates however Artillery Fire can be used defensively as well to support Assault tanks by keeping an enemy at bay and providing Assault tanks an opportunity to go on the offensive. Players should consider their targets carefully when a few choices are available. Picking off an enemy Sniper sitting in a single spot or targeting a top tier Assault tank is far more beneficial to the team than trying to land an artillery round on a fast moving Scout. Players can also use a technique known as "Shotgunning" whereby they entice an enemy tank up close for a 1 shot kill. This should only be performed if the players position is at risk of being overrun. Popular Artillery Fire tanks include the:

  • USA Tier VIII - M40/M43
  • UK Tier VI - FV304
  • French Tier X - Bat.-Châtillon 155 58
  • USSR Tier IX - 212A
  • German Tier VII - G.W. Panther
